Springwise: Metro Mates is the first service we’ve seen targeted at commuters underground, adopting Bluetooth technology to allow usage on the New Delhi Metro. To join the service, users create an account on the Metro Mates website and enter key pieces of information about themselves, such as personality traits, physical build, and whether they are seeking a relationship or a friendship. However, the service then differs from other dating or meet-up services by asking commuters to fill in their usual journey times and routes on the New Delhi public transport network. Users are then given a unique code, which fellow commuters can use whilst traveling to identify them by and subsequently initiate a connection via Bluetooth — assuming they like what they se... TrendOriginal: Riding on the waves of global warming comes the Ark.

The Ark Hotel is a concept for a vacation home designed to protect from extreme weather and created to be self-reliant.

The arch-shaped building, has a structure that enables it to float and exist autonomously on the surface of the water. The Ark was also designed to be a bioclimatic house with independent life-support systems, including elements ensuring a closed-functioning cycle. Wind turbines and its transparent roof is used to create energy. Rainwater can be collected from the roof. A load-bearing system of arches and cables allows weight redistribution along the entire corpus in case of an earthquake.

Trends Updates: The ebike, that has been developed in collaboration with GRACE, essentially generates power through the kinetic energy produced by the rider’s pedaling and this electric power in turn is used to assist the riders in their journey. The electric power is generated via a 250W brushless direct current wheel hub motor and the electric support while riding the bike can be controlled through buttons located on the handlebar of the ebike. The smart ebike is powered by a 36-volt/9.6Ah Lithium-ion battery pack, that has been conveniently and discreetly placed within the frame paneling above the crankcase. The battery itself can be charged through regular household power sockets and gets a complete recharge in about two to three hours. One of the most astounding f... Read more »

CNET: Remember those X-ray glasses advertised in the back of comic books? Imagine a handheld camera that can reveal the unseen, inner structures of everything from concrete bridges to body parts.

Researchers at Missouri University of Science and Technology under engineering professor Reza Zoughi have developed a patented device that can show the inner structures of objects in real time by using millimeter and microwave signals.

Potential applications include the detection of cancerous skin cells, termite damage to buildings, or concealed weapons at secure zones like airports.

Trends Updates: A new kiosk selling food created by Kraft answered the final question of who goes to the supermarket to buy dinner, "What do I want to eat?” Called "Meal Planning Solution”, the machine uses a facial scanner to see what you want to eat and make suggestions for recipes and products for purchase. It is one of the products in the Connected Store, Intel project which provides several solutions to transform spaces in the stores even more interesting.

The creation is based on the idea that 70% of Americans do not know what they want to buy in a supermarket to get there. The machine then makes suggestions to people, recommending dishes that go beyond the 10 most consumed in the country, ranging from pizza, spaghetti, hamburgers and ... Read more »

Inhabitat: While it may seem like tattoos are the norm now, no one has ink like this. A team from the University of Illinois led by John Rogers has devised a method to actually install LED lights under the skin. The research, published today in Nature Materials, saw the team develop flexible arrays 2.5 ?m thick and 100 x 100 ?m square which are currently smaller than any commercially available array.

In their research, the team printed circuits "directly onto a rigid glass substrate and then transferred them to an inexpensive biocompatible polymer called poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) to create a mesh-like array of LEDs and photodetectors.”

In short, the univer... Read more »

One of the more successful bike sharing services was launched in Paris in 2007 by the company Vélib’. Now a similar service is coming to New York City with a mobile technology twist.

SoBi allows users to interact with the service through their mobile phones. One can find nearby bicycles tracked by GPS, then unlock those available bikes using a mobile app.

Instead of the pre-built and deployed docking stations employed by other services, SoBi bikes will have a "lock box” attached to the rear wheel of the bike which can be used to lock the bike to typical bike racks. The lock box also has a fair amount of technology built in: it connects the bike to a c... Read more »

Softpedia:  A team of particle physicists announces the creation of a refrigerator, in a quantum system made up of three individual qubits, or quantum bits.

These are the basic components of such a system, and they all respect the entanglement principle. This basically states that any change affecting one of the qubits will affect the other two immediately.

The researchers who designed and created this particular innovation say that they used nothing more than the basic principles of thermodynamics for the job, adding only a little twist at the end.

The basic operating principle in the quantum refrigerator is fairly ... Read more »

MLB.com: Everyone seems to be talking about these new toasters at the MLB.com Shop. They are hot. They toast your bread, your English Muffin, your frozen waffle – and the best part is that it produces your favorite Major League Baseball team’s logo on one side.

"You don’t have to be a fan to love this,” said Josh Fink, CEO of Pangea Brands, but since we are all fans here and we eat, sleep and breathe baseball, we had to know more about the latest rage. So we bought one of our own, tried it out at home, and found it to be a little too … fun. We made more toast than we really had appetite to eat, because, frankly, we were just having a great time... Iconoculture:
In the world of endurance sports, there’s been a slow but steady escalation from marathons to ultramarathons, fun-runs to eco-challenges. Now a new race circuit has developed that seems a mashup of Iron Man athleticism and Burning Man primitivism.

Billed as the world’s toughest one-day endurance race on the planet, the "Tough Mudder” series resembles nothing so much as a 7-mile-long boot-camp obstacle course, replete with mud pits, barbed wire barricades, ropes courses, water crossings and even fire pits.

facechipz.jpg

FaceChipz.com has all the features of a real social network – but with one big difference: kids can only communicate with others they’ve physically exchanged FaceChipz tokens with – no strangers allowed! No one can arbitrarily contact them. No one can search for them. It’s the social network they collect, but doesn’t collect them.
The Chips have the weight, look and feel of a high-end casino chips — on the head-side is …a face — an emoticon. On the tail side is a code. They are totally collectable — think Pogs meets Webkinz. The initial collection has 200 and they just went on sale at ToysRus.
The way it works is: kids register each FaceChipz token online by entering the unique code on the back of the chip into the FaceChipz code reader. Once the FaceChipz are registered,... Read more »

indoorgardening.jpg

Cool Tools: Green Toys’ Indoor Gardening Kit all made their way into our home as gifts and then won us over across generational lines. They’re constructed of recycled milk cartons (high-density polyethylene), have a clean, attractive, colorful-but-not-garish aesthetic and are just shy of bulletproof.
The gardening kit’s a pleasure because it requires parental involvement (for the recently post-toddler set, at least), and patience from grownups and kids, alike: Plant a seed and watch it grow is a long-term activity, after all. The kit comes with three seed options – basil, sunflower and zinnias — if you don’t already have a supply on hand. Your child gets to choose what she wants to plant and take some ownership in the process.

A wedding is a special but stressful event. When the couple come from two different cultures, it’s challenging to incorporate both sets of traditions. A growing number of wedding planners are helping out.

Berkeley, CA-based ZahZoom Weddings helped Rachel Carroll, of Jewish faith, and Trinidadian Michelle Matt in their cross-cultural nuptials. The couple walked down the aisle to Caribbean steel drums and were read the Torah by a rabbi under a chuppah, or wedding canopy. Chinese American Ada Chen and Sachin Rekhi, who is Indian American, had Oakland-based wedding planner Marilyn Ambra assist in blending the styles and traditions of both cultures.

The Register Citizen: Graduates at many area colleges will be wearing "green” caps and gowns at commencement exercises this year, and it has nothing to do with their school colors.

It’s all part of a nationwide trend to graduate in attire made of recycled products, and at Southern Connecticut State University May 28, undergraduates will wear caps and gowns made from recycled plastic bottles. The new products are an alternative to the petroleum-based polyester gowns millions of graduates have bought each year.

Sounds like it could be stiff and uncomfortable, but Heather Stearns, recycling coordinator for Southern Connecticut State University, said the material is actually softer and more breathable than the old gear.

"The beauty of it is, the students coming to the university today come through elementary school, junior high and high school with a sense of sustainability,” Stearns said. "They’re coming with the expectation that we take... Read more »

Most of the guests were Twitter users and fans. On a projector screen, everybody could watch Twitter search queries related to @mtn_dew and occurrences of the hashtag #newdietdew.
People were really starting to enjoy the new product and Twitter searches for #newdietdew showed that it received very few negative responses to the taste test. From within the guests, one could hear exclamations like "truly the king of sodas,” "like drinking a rainbow…everybody knows the best part is the purple,” and "THE summer cocktail mixer of ‘09.” This could be partly because some tweets could win prizes like an HDTV or a casino weekend package.

Cnet News: URL-shortening services are abundant and becoming more so. They’re usually designed with a priority on minimum character length, not easy reading: Is.gd, Bit.ly, Twurl.nl, Tr.im, Sn.im”, Cligs, and TinyURL.
So what’s new now? First, Twitter, and second, shortening URLs is becoming an actual business–notably at present through the addition of "analytics” features that can let those who use the service see data about how many people clicked on links, when, where they’re located, and the Web page where they found the shortened link.
One of the problems with short URLs is knowing what you’re getting into when you click them. Is that link really the fun video of the guy tripping into the lake, or is it site that will spam you or attempt to install malware? Is it r... Read more »

crowdsourced.jpg
Examiner.com: Crowdsourcing is a phenomenon that is gaining fast acceptance in the business community and beyond. It has the potential to affect business quite fundamentally and can usher in radical changes to business models and business processes everywhere.
Crowdsourcing is a method that involves and uses "crowds” (i.e., large, undefined, randomly distributed, undirected, unsupervised groups of people) to performs tasks and accomplish goals.
Here are 2 live examples of successful crowdsourcing:
MOBILE PHONE DESIGN

carrot%20caviar.jpg
FT.com: In recent years, some forward-thinking chefs, who believe that personal expression and creativity are more important than slavish devotion to symbolic luxury goods, have abandoned the antiquated approach of haute cuisine, a style of cooking traditionally based on a few select ingredients.
These forward-thinking chefs are seeking out the highest-quality ingredients, usually from their area, without regard to their place in the traditional fine dining canon. Combined with a deeply held belief in the transformative power of the cooking process, they are setting an example that, if it catches on, could change what we grow and eat, both in restaurants and at home.

You pick up Cascade, your usual brand and scan the barcode with your iPhone. You find that it gets a respectable rating of 7.1 out of ten. Core77: Shibuya-based Naruse-Inokama Architects, comprised of Jun Inokuma and Yuri Naruse, takes wood waste from houses and turns that into paper. The resultant paper is then formed into a stack of Post-It-like sticky notes that are in turn shaped like little houses. AFP: Seek and ye shall find. A number of new Internet search engines created by Christian, Jewish or Muslim entities aim to filter out queries from Web users in a way that is more relevant to those users and keeps them from temptation, alcohol and pornography.

We wanted to provide a solution to explore the Web in a safe environment, where you won’t bump into explicit content or immoral websites, like pornography,” said Reza Sardeha, the Amsterdam-based founder of the Muslim-oriented search engine I’mHalal.

Gizmodiva: Angry Birds in no doubt a sensation and it is no surprise that they were making a big splash at the Toy Fair this year. One of their most fun items was the cool Angry Birds rubber playground balls. They look so much fun and almost as awesome as the game. I cannot wait to buy them and bounce them off walls. There are many different birds and sizes to pick from. Kids and adults who are fans of the game are certain to buy these as collectible play things. CScout: Usually we try to visit pop-up stores in person, but a new store has made that a bit more challenging: Airwalk launched their limited edition of the 90’s style Jim Plastic and Jim Tennis shoes by invisible pop-up stores in New York and Los Angeles. There were no walls, no store fronts, no sales people or shoes to try on.

The iPhone app is an Augmented Reality (AR) app developed by the mobile start-up GoldRun. The way it works is that you download an app to your iPhone, go to a specified location and then snap a photo of the shoes that will appear on the screen. Collecting the virtual item with the phone qualifies one to queue-up and pre-order one of the only 300 pairs.

Springwise: Dutch Deadjeans accepts the back pockets of beloved denim pants from all over the world. In return, it will fashion those pockets with felt lining and convert them into unique smartphone holders. Consumers need only carefully remove the pocket they have in mind — it must be at least 14cm high by 9cm wide — and mark the front and back of those pockets with stickers Deadjeans provides. Uber-Review: When it comes to pets, dogs are sooooo much better than cats in all ways but one: they don’t really care where they take a crap. You take them for a walk and they will go out of their way to drop a fresh, juicy turd at their earliest convenience. If you are civically minded, that means pulling out a plastic bag and trying to scoop up the poop without touching it (not as hard as it sounds, trust me) – or you could leave it there and risk fines and scorn… or you could spend $100 and carry around a ridiculous looking dog dung vacuum from Hammacher Schlemmer.
